India - a land of Myriad herbs . Discuss about medicinal plants and herbal products

India is one of the richest countries in the world in the field of biodiversity. There are more than 7000 medicinal plants which have been listed under traditional medical systems like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. 

There are about 1178 medicinal plant species in the country.  Of these, the annual domestic consumption of 242 species is more than 100 metric tons.The export demand of medicinal plants during 2022-23 is estimated to be around 1,85,500 MT and export value is Rs 6,211 crore. The estimated domestic production of medicinal plants is more than 3 lakh MT. Cultivation of medicinal plants in the priority list of 140 species.  Subsidy is provided at the rate of 30%, 50% and 75% of the cost.

There are more than 5000 herbal formulations in India under the traditional knowledge covering Unani, Ayurveda, Siddha and Tibetan medicine and folk traditions. 

960 aromatic medicinal plants are used by contemporary trade and Ayurvedic industry. Out of them, 178 species are  More than 100 metric tons are consumed per year. This is about 80% of the total industrial demand of all botanicals in the country.

 India is the second largest exporter of medicinal plants and herbal products. India has about 45000 plant species, and among them, there are more than 7,333 medicinal aromatic plants from India. 

The yield of medicinal plants is being continuously increased by the government efforts.The National Medicinal Plants Board under the Ministry of AYUSH has launched a national campaign to promote the cultivation of herbal plants across the country in view of the Aazadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
